Border Collie

Overview

The Border Collie is recognized around the world as one of the best sheep-herding dogs today. Intense and athletic, nothing can distract a Border Collie at work.

Height

18 to 23 inches tall

Weight

35 to 50 pounds

Color

Border Collies can be several colors although the most common are the black or blue merle, with or without white markings.

Coat type

Two coat types:

  • Short: This coat is short and smooth with slightly longer hairs on the back of the legs, tail, and belly.
  • Rough: The rough coat has hairs of medium length with a slightly wavy outer coat.

Grooming

Both coats should be brushed weekly. The ears and teeth need to be cleaned weekly, and the toenails trimmed on the same schedule.

Life expectancy

13 to 15 years

Temperament

This is an intense breed who needs a job to do every single day. If not herding sheep, she needs to participate in obedience training and a canine sport. Without something to do, the Border Collie will be unhappy, bored, and will develop behavior problems. This breed is usually not recommended for first time dog owners or for people who simply want a pet dog.

Activity level

Border Collies are a busy workaholics who needs vigorous daily exercise.

Training

Training will help keep the Border Collie's mind busy. The breed wants to be good and when she understands what is being asked of her, will strive to please.
