My neighbors Chihuahua only had one pup and it died. The mommy seems sooo bummed...

My neighbors two yr old Chihuahua had her first litter this last Thurs. night when all were sleeping. By the time the family was able to help her, her only pup, born breech, had it's head stuck and died. Unfortunately it was her only pup and being only three days ago, she is having a horrible time adjusting without her baby. Some of her behaviors are: Super Clingy to owners, ears down and eyes looking sad-doesn't really even perk up to sweet talk, no tail wagging-it's tucked and it's staying there, and not eating real well. I can tell she likes to be held but keeps VERY still. Her teats are still very swollen as she has nothing to nurse. They've tried little beanie babies but she didn't like them. Thanks for any help and/or advice. P.S. She doesn't have any bad smells coming off of her, so I don't THINK she has an infection, but anything is possible. One strange thing I noted though is that I didn't see that she was still bleeding...it's only been three days.  Is this normal? thanks again Miss Shawnee

Miss Shawnee, I am sorry to hear about your neighbor's dog, how sad for her.  Dogs can be very sensitive and she probably is a bit overwhelmed by the whole ordeal.  I am not surprised she is clingy and not eating really well.  It may just take some time for her to get past her experience.

It would be important at this time to keep a close eye on her to make sure she is eating something and drinking.  She could become dehydrated pretty quickly and that would make her feel worse.  If she refuses food altogether, it would be wise for her to see the vet to make sure she does not have an infection going on.  Being very little and only having one baby, she possibly may not have had much discharge or bleeding after a few days.

As far as her spirits go, just keep trying to give her attention and interact with her and hopefully she will return to her old self soon.  Please let us know if you need more information, good luck and keep us posted!
