Dog heaving, then vomiting, then licking the floor, and not drinking water

 Hello

Would love some insight.  Three times in the past month, I've been awoken in the middle of the night (it's 4:12 am right now) hearing my 12-yo female chocolate lab dry-heaving loudly.  She then vomits the contents of her stomach.  All the while, licking the floor and rugs obsessively, and not drinking water.  She is calm right now, after I've spent some time with her, but I am concerned.  Thanks for any thoughts anyone might have on this.

Thank you for your kind reply.  After a second night of the same, I am going to take Emma to the vet today.

Do you mop with a Swiffer Wet Jet?  They say that fluid can kill a dog?  Is that what your dog's licking off the floor?

Thanks, Sheri, no we don't use a swiffer wet jet to mop.  She's licking the floor and rugs as if she's trying to get something off of her tongue, yet she won't drink water.

Emmas Dad, it is really hard to say exactly what is going on with Emma.  It could be something as simple as a dietary indescretion (ate something she shouldn't have) or the start of a medical problem.  The licking obsessively can indicate nausea.  If she has not been in to see the vet in the last couple of months for bloodwork and a physical exam, that is a good place to start.  It will put your mind at ease if you can take out the guess work.

Many aging dogs start to develop such conditions as kidney or liver disease which can cause occasional vomiting among other things.  If certain medical conditions are detected early enough, treatments may be available that will extend the life of a beloved pet.  If you think of it in human years, Emma is around 84 years old!
