Constipation

My Cat Lou is having a problem with Constipation. It got so bad that I brought him to the Vet since he was crying and complaining. He was straining in the litterbox but not able to deficate. He would lie on the floor and he would leak liquid and som diahrrea. Lou is not interested in eating or drinking and my main concern is that he is also a diabetic and has a problem with an underactive thyroid. The vet rtested his blood and his sugar was good - by the thyroid medication in his system was too much so we have cut the medication dose. Lou did eat a small amount for the vet while he was boarded for 24 hours in their hospital. The vet did a rectal exam and advised that there was no hard stool in the bowel. Lou is home and absolutely miserable. Over this past weekend he had a low blood sugar attack since I was giving him his insuln and he was not eatting enough. I am concerned and I have called the vet again and I am awaiting his return call. I have tried high fiber wet food mixed with Lou's regular food and I have tried mixing in Pumpkin as well but since he is eatting little nothing seems to be doing the trick. Any advice would be helpful. THanks

Karen, so sorry to hear Lou is having such troubles.  Ask your vet for a product called Vetasyl and see if it would be ok for your kitty to take that.  It is a fiber supplement that has been very helpful to cats in Lou's situation.  Also ask if there is a prescription diet available that Lou may be able to eat exclusively that will help increase his fiber intake.  For example, Purina Veterinary Diets makes a formula for overweight cats called OM and one for diabetics, DM.  They both come in canned and dry. Make sure Lou has access to plenty of fresh water at all times.

There may be some link to constipation and hypothyroidism in cats.  Hypothyroidism in cats is extremely rare in cats so there is not alot of information available.  You have an extra challenge on your hands (keeping him eating) with the diabetes.  Now that the vet has adjusted the dose on Lou's medication for the thyroid condition, you may have better luck managing the constipation.  As an alternative medicine approach, I knew a cat who had good luck with acupuncture for constipation.

Maybe a long shot but if the vet doesn't feel Lou is constipated at this point (due to the exam) is there any possibility he spends so much time trying to go because of a urinary tract infection? I hope Lou is feeling better soon!
