10 tips to save money on pet care
It's no secret that owning a pet isn't cheap. We've compiled a list of the top 10 ways to reduce the cost of pet ownership without sacrificing quality.
1) If you haven’t already, spay or neuter
Spayed and neutered pets have fewer health and behavior problems. They also have fewer puppies and kittens, which aren't cheap either!

2) Keep ‘em healthy
Prevention truly is the best medicine. Pet obesity can lead to other health problems, such as bone and joint trouble. Keep them on a strict feeding schedule and make sure to exercise your pet everyday (level of exercise needed depends on breed)

3) Buy toys and chewies in bulk
While more expensive immediately, this can save a lot of money down the road. When buying canned foods, buy the larger, more economical cans.

5) Consider low-cost clinics for basic veterinary services
If vet visits are a stretch for your budget, low-cost clinics can provide a way to save some money on basic veterinary services such as standard vaccinations and spay/neuter procedures. These clinics don’t always include a physical exam or offer a full range of services, so it is still important to visit your vet regularly if at all possible. Check with your local animal shelter or humane society for information on clinics in your area

6) Shop around for medications
Your vet isn’t the only source for pet medications. There are plenty of places online where you can buy pet medications.

7) Become a pet chef
Homemade pet food and treats are a great way to both save money and to control your pet's diet. The best way to know what goes into your pet's food is to make it yourself. Consult your vet to make sure that your homemade goodies have the nutritional value your pets need. See these great recipes to get started!

8) DIY pet-sitting
Pet-sitters are great, but if you have a friend or neighbor that also owns a pet, consider swapping services when you go out of town. An “I scratch behind your ears, you scratch behind mine” arrangement might be just the ticket for short out-of-town stays.

9) Make your own safe carpet cleaners
If you’re constantly cleaning pet stains out of your carpets, those expenses can add up. Consider a more homegrown solution. Specifically 1/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup warm water. Then apply to the stain, blot and repeat!

10) Take on the grooming
From bathing to nail trimming to teeth brushing, there are a lot of things you don’t need a vet to do. Sure, it’s nice to have someone else to trim Toto’s tootsies, but it’s much more economical (and not that much more difficult) to do it yourself. Your pet's coat may not look it's absolute best if you don't go with a professional groomer, but if you can live with that, bust out that shampoo and brush!
