Teeth or Jaw problems with pugs

I have a female pug who hasn't eaten for two days. I have tried to open her mouth to see if there is a problem and she screams!! The vet told me that she might have an abcess in her mouth or that she might have a splinter stuck in her jaw. I opened her mouth and did not see anything abnormal. Has anyone ever had this problem with a dog?? I wonder if something is wrong with her jaw because it hurts her so. She can open her mouth some by herself but not all the way.

It is dificult to tell exactly what is going on without getting a good look inside your dogs mouth, but it sounds like she is pretty uncomfortable. Dogs can get things wedged in thier mouths, especially across the roof of the mouth such as a stick or a bone and it can be hard to see the object because of the dogs resistance. An abscess from either an injury or a bad tooth is another possibility, although an abcess rarely is present with out a very fowl odor.

There is a condition called Masticatory Muscle Myositis that occurs in dogs that causes pain when trying to open the mouth, swelling of facial muscles, drooling and a fever. They often refuse food because of the pain of chewing. This condition requires medical treatment and medication.

In any case, if your dog is not eating and in pain, it is best to have her checked out by the Vet as soon as possible.
