Bladder Stones

My terrier mix was recently diagnosed with two golf ball size bladder stones, which we eliminated in 30 days through the Hills SD diet. The veterinarian was as surprised as I was that they dissipated. While I was relieved to avoid surgery this time, does anyone have suggestions on how to prevent bladder stones from recurring in the future?

what kind of treats do you feed your baby?  I am thinking now that the ones sold in the stores are not healthy for them.  My dog has bladder stones and will need surgery a second time.  She doesn't seem to like the Science Diet food,  Any suggestions?

Yes, there are other companies that make prescription diet foods for bladder stones.  Purina, Eukanuba and Waltham all make a food for your dogs condition.  Ask your vet if they can order the food your dog needs from another company.  Your dog should only eat treats  formulated for her condition as well or you may continue to have problems with stones.

That is amazing that the stones dissipated in a month! A lucky little dog. The most common urinary stone in a dog is called Struvite with the second runner up being the Calcium Oxalate. It is a very good sign that they can be controlled by diet. Hills makes a diet called C/D for the control of Struvite crystals but it is not labeled for Calcium Oxalate. If your vet feels your dog had Struvite stones, you will need to keep your dog on the prescription food and only that food, for the rest of his life. No treats unless the are approved by the Vet. Give extra attention to the water bowl cleaning and changing twice a day. You may notice your dog will urinate more volume and drink more on the new diet.
