vomiting and excessive hair loss

My 5 1/2 month old puppy started vomiting today and doesn't seem to be able to hold down anything including water. There's no sign of any blood or bloody diarrhea but since we had to clean her crate and gave her a bath, she seems to be shedding a lot of hair.  She sort of refused to use the bathroom outside last night which is unusual for her and then tried to go in the house when we let her in. Of course we put her back outside immediately but she snapped at my boyfriend when he reached for her.  Today, her mood has been as if she got in trouble, she cowers and has her ears back and has done nothing but vomit and shed. Could this be stress related or is it more serious than that?

Bucket is doing much better. She laid on our laps for hours and When I gave her some bottled water, I put a little bit of sugar and salt in it, she kept it down.  By morning she was back to her playful self but she still wasn't eating. We kept her hydrated with bottled water (no added sugar or salt), I don't trust the tap water in Dayton. She wasn't up for eating her food except for a few bites here and there. But we did find out what she had gotten into... she chewed 2 holes in the carpet by her crate. There was no sign of the carpet fibers or padding so she had to have swallowed them.  She had torn carpet and padding before but did not eat any of it, so we figured that's what was causing her vomiting. She has now associated the vomiting with her dog food so now she doesn't want to eat her food. We had been able to keep her away from table food until now. I have given her potoatoes to eat (plain) and have mixed in small amounts of her food to try to get her to eat it again.  So far it's working. She's back to being our Bucket again, just a few pounds lighter but that will change in no time.  Thank you for your help and suggestions.

I am so glad to hear Bucket is doing better.   I once helped treat a Boston Terrier who had eaten carpet and was still eating and pooping fairly normal before they decided to have her checked by the vet.  It had been 6 weeks since the dog had eaten the carpet and there it was on the x-ray, still in the stomach!  The dog had the carpet surgically removed and was fine after.  Pretty amazing little dog.

Good luck and keep us posted on Buckets' road to recovery!

Since Bucket's carpet incident, she is now eating her food and trying to get at ours. She is back to her playful self and has had no further problems with eating or drinking. She's even gained back the weight she lost and then some! She still tries to eat everything in site or at least taste it. Her newest venture is to eat bees, even if it means getting stung. Which she has been and it still doesn't stop her. She even got her much older "brother", Wolfie, to try and eat them.

Great news that Bucket is well!  My dog eats bees too!  Only once in his 13 years has he gotten stung on the nose.

Darice n Bucket, I think there is a possibility that your dog is in some kind of pain which could explain the snapping at your boyfriend and cowering.  The vomiting and not being able to keep anything down could be a serious medical problem (that is probably very painful) which requires immediate attention.  She may have eaten something that could now be stuck in her digestive tract somewhere.  The shedding is probably due to the stress of whatever is going on with her.

I have to recommend that you take her to the vet as soon as possible if there has been no improvement.  Even if it means the emergency vet clinic.  She can become dehydrated very quickly and her life could be in danger.  Good luck and let us know how your dog is doing.
