symptoms of UTI
I have taken my cat to the vet 4 times in the past 5 weeks. Each time I'm told she has a UTI and I'm given antibiotics for her. The symtoms of the UTI stop for a few days and then start again. She has blood in her urine and she is urinating in inappropriate places. She urinates often and skooches across the carpet as a dog would. Otherwise she is playful and has normal behavior. I cannot afford to keep taking her to the vet and getting the same tests done over and over. She does not have kidney stones though she is getting dehydrated each time she gets sick. I'm at a loss about what to do for her. Please help!

Ae, I understand what you are saying, it can get very costly to make repeat trips to the vet and frustrating too! Have you changed her food at all? Has the vet offered a diet change for your cat? A prescription diet, if indicated may help resolve her ongoing UTI, if that is truly the case. You could also be asked to get referred out to a specialist. It sounds expensive but it is worth the trip because you will most likely get a diagnosis and plan of action for treatment with out multiple visits. If you cannot see the specialist, ask your vet if they are willing to consult with the specialist by phone.
The scooting across the carpet can be from irritation from the UTI but it may also be a separate issue of either a tapeworm or full anal sacs. Although not as common in cats, the anal sacs (small pockets on either side of the rectum) can fill up and be irritating. They can be easily be expressed with a Technician appointment (if your vet does that). If it is a tapeworm, be on the look out for small rice like segments that may be seen on the fur around the hind end or on the bedding the cat sleeps on. The best treatment for that is also from the vet, the over the counter medicine is not nearly as effective.
