Sudden change in attitude towards our other cat
My wife and I have two cats that we have had for the last three years with the oldest and two with the youngest. Our male cat who is the elder, snuck out of the house while my wife was trying to get our ten month old daughter out of the house and into the car. She left without realizing he had gotten out and return several hours later to find him curled up in front of our door. She let him and our female cat who has gotten along freat with him for the last two years has suddenly begun to hiss and howl at him anytime he comes near her. They have spent hours laying across the room staring at each other over the last two days. I bathed him thinking that he smelled like the outside and that was what upset her. It didn't help. I do not know much about cats other than bathe them when needed, trim their claws and give them food and water and give them lots of love and care. I honestly do not have any idea what to do to calm our female cat. IF anyone has any ideas that could help I'd be willing to listen.

Apweng, cats can certainly be difficult to understand at times. My guess is that the hissing and howling by your female cat is as a result of the male being out and then returning to her territory smelling very different. The bath probably got off most of the smell she was opposed to from outside but she may not be a fan of shampoo either. Hard to say for sure.
I think as long as there are no physical altercations going on, you could let the two of them work it out. It helps to ease tension for cats to eat together, but not right next to each other. Maybe you could try offering some canned food or some tasty treats to them in opposite corners of the room.
Please let us know if the cats are making progress, still at odds in a few days or things go drastically down hill. I wish you good luck!
