My male cat bites my husband
Written by cristinaolson
Help! My husband and I just moved. We have 3 cats and our youngest male cat hisses, growls, and has badly scratched and bitten my husband. The cat is just over 1-year old and neutered. He has always been calm and loving with me - and still is. It's just that he's virtually attacked my husband. Is there anything I can do?

Cristina, It's hard to say why your cat has issues with your husband but the stress of the move probably is causing more anxiety for your cat at this time. Cats are very sensitive to smells such as aftershave, strong soap or deodorant or toothpaste so it is possible the cat finds him offensive in that respect.
The best way to initiate change is to reinforce good behavior and ignore the undesired behavior. Any feedings or treats need to come from your husband. He could try playing with the cat from a distance, tossing toys or a toy on the end of a string. If the cat makes any aggressive advances, your husband needs to walk away and try again later. Cats respond very poorly to any type of punishment, it only reinforces this type of behavior.
Cats have a natural instinct to chase, hunt, attack and defend themselves like they would if they still lived in the wild. The more toys you have that can help fulfill these needs should help release some anxiety and aggression. There is a natural anxiety reducing herb mixture calIed Rescue Remedy that I have had good luck with in relaxiing cats. I hope this helps, I can imagine what a stressful situation this must be for you and your husband.
