My Dachshund/ Chihuahua shakes her head and scratches her ears alot
My dog keeps scratching her ears, shaking her head and whimpering a lot. I've checked to see if she has ear mites but there are no signs of them. They get what looks like red lines in them and feel feverish. It goes away but always comes back in as little as a couple of hours. I also noticed that she scratches every where else and the same redness appears on her stomach and legs. I've only had her almost two weeks and she is around a year or a little older. I don't know anything about her history. Should I take her to the vet? Any advice would be appreciated. I know its driving her crazy as well as us.

Sweet_pea, it sure would be easier if they could talk! Ear mites are not all that common in dogs. When they have an ear infection it is usually a bacteria or yeast. What you are describing sounds more like an allergy where it involves other parts of the body. One possibility is a food allergy. Some dogs can only tolerate certain ingredients in thier diet. It is usually (but not always) the protein source and most commonly beef. Other causes could be allergy related from either something she is inhaling or something she is coming in contact with. Flea allergies are also very common. One bite can drive a dog crazy for hours. I think a trip to the vet would be helpful to know what you are dealing with and how to treat it. Good luck!
