my cat chasing the other cat from litter box

We just combined households - two cats, one younger 4 or 5, and the other older 11 or 12.  The younger one has adjusted well to the new surroundings, the older one ventures out every now and then.  The younger one though has started chasing the older one out of the litter box (there are two but the younger one has begun to use both.)  How can I stop this behavior and why is she doing it?  It seems to be prohibiting the older one from going beyond the bedroom.

Bigmoke, cats are quite territorial  and the younger one may be wanting to claim both boxes.  The rule of thumb with cats and litter boxes is one more box than cat.  This eliminates alot of the problems because there are more options.  the ideal situation since you have a cat that prefers two boxes is to add two more boxes in a different area if possible for the older cat.  Then the younger cat can't be in two places at once.

Sometimes it takes a while after cats have moved in together for them to settle in and work out living with different beings.  Moving is not only stressful for people but as much so for the animals.  Try to spend some extra time playing, brushing and patting each cat to help relieve anxiety.  Good luck!
