love bites
Written by tugmeister
Hi, I'm new to PetDoc, but not to pets. I've just adopted a wonderful 2yr old female Norwegian Forest Cat. I've never adopted a grown cat before, so I can use help. When I pet her, rather than giving me kisses, she gives me love bites, more than one! Is she trying to tell me something?
Thanks for any advice!

Tugmeister, congratulations on your new kitty she sounds like a beauty. As far as the love bites, she is probably just trying to play but it is a good idea to discourage play behavior that encourages aggressiveness. Cats like to make full use of the environment, including the people in it sometimes to get thier physical and mental work out. Especially if an object or person moves. She is practicing her skills she would need if she lived in the wild, like fighting off the enemy.
Cats need to release all that hardwired instinctive urge to hunt and escape the foe. Introduce a wide variety of toys to see what is her preference. Things she can chase or attack will help redirect that energy. If she tries to bite while you are patting her, distract her with a toy until she is calmer.
