jumping bean puppy
Written by frenchi
I have a mutt puppy about one and half years old who still has a bad jumping problem. Even when I try to stop him and say "no" or "don't" it doesn't seem to get through his head and the next time I'm with him he's jumping all over me. He jumps when I first get home and when his really excited about something...going outside, a ball, etc. What is the best way to train a stubborn dog to stop jumping?

Frenchi, jumping can be a hard habit to break and I understand your frustration. The ultimate reward for dogs is physical attention from the owner. The dog may not hear what you are saying if you have to physically push him off you because you are touching him and to him that is positive reinforcement. What you can try is when he jumps on you, take a step backwards and in your deepest alpha voice give him a sharp OFF command. (Off should be used when ever there are not four paws on the floor. Off sends a clear message not to be confused with 'down' (lay down) or any other command used in training.) Then when he is not jumping or sitting, then reward him with patting. He needs to earn this attention from you by not jumping.
If your dog is very food motivated, you can use a small treat as reward until he has kicked the jumping habit. Another thing to keep in mind is that he reads you and if you are low key about your arrival and going out side he is less likely to think he needs to get so excited.
