good kitty turned bad
Written by lunamarley
recently our 7 year old female cat has gotten very sick, and it is visable. Our 2 year old male cat, who got along great with the sick one, has now turned against her. he attacks her for no reason at all. She is completely defensless, she can't walk and can barley stand. I'm scared to leave them alone. Has anyone seen their good kitty turn bad against their buddy? we can't figure out why he is doing this. Any advice or experiences would be helpful.
thanks

Thanks Marcie.
Do you know anything about cats around 7 years experiencing vertigo? She can barely walk, spins her head around and has very low energy. Her eyes are starting to focus again. The vet gave her ear drops and and antibiotic, but her blood work came back normal. We have to carry her to her food, and litter box and keep her in places where she won't get hurt. She fell down the stairs the other day. I just don't know what to do. I'm so frustrated not being able to help her!! I know it can range from an ear infection to cancer. Should we wait it out a week before getting expensive mri's and cat scans? She has been like this since Thursday the 28th. My concern is that we haven't seen any progression in her health and i don't want to wait to long and it end up being a bad decision. Any advice, experience would be appreciated.
Thanks- Lunamarley
Lunamarley, what your are describing sounds something like kitty Vestibular Disease. It is not all that common and as you mentioned can be caused by a few different medical conditions including ear infections and cancer. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be not knowing for sure what is going on with your kitty and what to do about it.
It is a tough call to say if having the MRI or CT done now would be beneficial or not. The more information you have, the better. I am all for diagnostics but I also know how expensive they can be. If her condition is not caused by cancer or infection, the tests may be inconclusive and the condition may reslove with time. On the other hand, ruling out a medical problem can be helpful in arriving at a diagnosis. If the tests did reveal something like a tumor you might think about what you would do with that information. For example would you be able to have the surgery done if it was operable.
Was the vet able to offer you any suggestions on what they thought might be causing the conditon? Is there any possibility that your kitty could have gotten in to anything toxic that maybe didn't show up in the bloodwork?
I have included a couple of links (in blue) that I hope will have some helpful information for you. Please keep us posted and if you need any more information we will be happy to help. If anyone has experienced a similar situation, please let us know the details.

Lunamarley, sorry to hear about your sick kitty. It is not uncommon in the animal world for the healthy ones to pick on the weakest one. A mother cat will often try to kill one of her kittens if she feels it has something wrong with it or it is weak. This instinct comes from the natural selection and survival of the fittest kind of rational.
I am sure that your boy cat knows there is something very wrong with his house mate and she probably smell very different than she did when she was healthy. I would recommend keeping them separate at all times. I am sure the older one is stressed enough being that ill. Good luck and I hope it all goes as well as can be expected.
