Dog vs. Possum

My dog chases and occasionally catches possums that show up in our yard first thing in the morning. Usually they play dead, he paws at them for awhile and that's the end of it. But I just found a long-dead possum behind the shed. He's up-to-date on his shots - should I be concerned about anything else?

Thanks! I love the PVS pipe idea. We also have rabbits, which are too fast for our Boxer to catch but the pipe will also provide Thumper an escape route too.

Dogs just want to have fun. Rabies is rare in possums but do check with your vet, some recommend updating the Rabies vaccine in the event of an encounter with any wild animal. Possums are nocturnal for the most part so if you want to avoid a run in with your dog you could take your pooch out on a leash after dark.

Another option to avoid possum dog contact would be to provide a safe place for the possum to escape. Some people use pieces of 8 inch pvc pipe in 5 foot lengths and place a few around the yard. They are mostly in search of food, so keeping all pet food inside will encourage the possum to move on to new areas.
