Crate training a new puppy

My roommate and I are trying to crate train her dog. How long is it appropriate to keep in there and what is the best way to get him used to his cage so he doesn't cry at night?

The best way to get your dog to love the crate is to create positive associations with it. Most dogs naturally like to have a den area if it is a postive experience. Never use the crate as punishment or force the dog to go in or out. Putting toys or treats in the crate will help the dog enjoy going in the crate. Feeding your dog in the crate with the door open will help your dog see it as a safe place.

The length of time the dog can stay in the crate depends on the age and period of time the dog can go with out needing a potty break. Young pups need to go out at least every 3 to 4 hours. To help reduce the possibilty of the dog peeing or pooping in the crate, make sure he gets a good walk soon after eating.
