cats on the counter!

Anyone know any tricks for keeping your cat off of countertops?

I have tried everything...squirt bottle...clapping...scruffing...spraying with water...nothing is working and I am very consistant. I love this cat to pieces but am tired of cleansing the counter after her frequent visits. I can't leave food of any sort around or leave the room when I'm cooking. It has me exhausted and frustrated! HELP

It does sound like a frustrating situation.  Cats are very sensitive to smell, I wonder if you can park something offensive on the counter until the she kicks the habit.  Cats as a rule don't like citrus types of smells.  They are also not fond of strong smells like Vicks Vapor Rub.  I have used that on the outside of the bedroom door at night when my cat thinks I should be up.

I also had a cat a long time ago that got on the counter to get food.  Turns out she had a tapeworm and she thought she was starving.  After a treatment for it, she stopped the counter trips.

Good luck!

I think all cat owners have battled with this one. I have made any cat counter cruising attempts a negative experience which has conditioned my cats to give up the sport. I clap hands loudly on the counter, make hissing sounds and chase them away. Some people use a water spray bottle. One behaviorist recommends setting a noise trap for the middle of the nighter. Some tin cans and some clear fishing line that the cat can trip when it jumps up. (only set this up when you will be home) The down side is, it will probably scare you too!
