Written by frenchi
It's summertime and the fleas are bad...what is the best/most effective preventative flea medicine I could buy for my dogs?
They are itching like crazy, help!

For years, I have used brewers yeast and garlic for my dogs during the hot months (I live in Texas). Since I have been doing this, I have never had a flea problem. Apparantly, fleas, and other pests, don't like the smell of garlic and the brewers yeast is supposed to help with their skin. An old wives tale, some might say.... but, it has workded wonderfully for me. I HATED putting toxic chemicals on my dogs skin. The question you have to ask yourself is...."Would I put it on my skin?" Also... you shouldn't put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your mouth. Your skin is very absorbtive (sp?). Just a little FYI! :o)
I'd like know how much and how often is one to give garlic and brewers yeast to a dog? I have a 12yr old Jack Russell Terrier. Also, does it interfere with medications such as Metacam and Tramadol? I live in Florida and the fleas are abundant!
I have never used garlic and yeast as a flea prevention but whenever there are other medications involved I would ask your vet just to be safe.

i prefer advatix to frontline myself
but i have found that the green tops of carrots left around the house will keep flees awayits an old home remady of my grandmothers i have 4 dogs and it seams to work well here i hope this is helpfull.
I am starting to hear that stuff like frontline will kill your dog over time. There is a guy promoting "cedar-cide" a for of eat Texas cedar oil that supposedly is safe. This stuff doesn't seem to work. Any thoughts on this or my flea problem?
Frenchi, I have had very good luck with Frontline Plus for dogs. It works with in hours and it is very user friendly. It seems to work best if you do not bathe your dog two days before or after application. It is available from the vet or some pet stores. It is more expensive than some other treatments but it is worth it and it works!
