Bathing Donut

What is an acceptable amount of time to wait between baths? Our dog Donut doesn't get much love in the bath department, but is there a good reason NOT to wait until she starts smelling funky?

No, but I once had a friend who Febreezed her dog. I always thought that seemed like it may be toxic for the pup... Would using wipes even be safe?

My roommate just got these lavender-scented dog wipes to try to wash Donut without using water. After using them she smells a little better, but I'm just not sure it did anything. Anyone have any experience with using wipes instead of shampoo and water?

With the era or better pet care, doggie day care and dog parks also comes the 'dog wash'. These are self service bathtubs you can use whenever you want to bathe your dog. They are attended by a human, in case you need help and usually shampoo is provided.

Another approach you can try is washing Donut outside with the hose (no kiddie pool required). All you need is a leash and tree. We used to do this with our lab to keep the inside of the house and the bathrooms from getting too dog-smelling post bathtime.

Speaking of bathing. How do you bathe Donut? We've tried several methods ranging from an indoor bathtub (yes the same one I use every day but really the only indoor option in the winter) to a kids' swimming pool outside in the summer to the 'leash and hose' method. All three do the job but have drawbacks. Has anyone found the answer?

The amount of bathing Donut requires really depends on her hair coat and skin type. If she keeps it clean and she does not have that doggy odor going on, she could go several months. Regular brushing removes the dead hair and freshens up the look. Too much bathing can dry out a dogs skin, so waiting until the funky comes on is best.

I have had both types of dogs, the Golden who needed a bath every 3 to 4 weeks and the Shepherd who never smells doggy.
