Weimaraner

Overview

This German hunting dog was bred to work quickly, be a fast mover in the fields and brush, and to be a problem solver.

Height

23 to 27 inches tall

Weight

60 to 90 pounds

Color

Silver

Short and smooth

Grooming

Once per week, brush the coat with a soft bristle brush, clean the ears and teeth, and trim the toenails.

11 to 13 years

Temperament

These silver dogs are bright, somewhat independent, and retain all of the problem-solving abilities they were bred for. In addition, they do not do well when left alone for many hours each day. When bored, they will find ways to amuse themselves and that's often with destructive behaviors including excessive barking or escaping from the yard.

Activity level

Weimaraners are active, athletic dogs who need vigorous daily exercise. Many, in fact, do better with two sessions of vigorous activity per day.

Training

Training should begin early so that the owner can establish some control and the puppy can learn the rules of the home.

Common Health Problems

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems
  • Bloat and torsion
  • Von Willebrand's disease
