Siamese

Overview

Named for the country of Siam (now Thailand), Siamese cats were kept by the royalty and people of importance. They were also given as gifts to visitors of note. This is a very old breed.

Physical characteristics

Siamese cats are long legged, long bodied, with a long thin tail, long neck, and a wedge-shaped head with a long nose. They appear (and are) very athletic.

Color

Colored points (mask, ears, legs and tail) on a lighter (usually cream) background.

Coat

Short and close

Grooming and care

Brush weekly with a soft bristle brush. Clean teeth once a week, especially during kittenhood so the cat becomes accustomed to it. Trim toenails weekly and check the ears, cleaning when needed.

Life expectancy (indoors)

16 to 18 years

Temperament

This is a sensitive, reactive, high-energy breed who would prefer to be close to you at all times. They want to be in your lap, across your shoulders, or snuggled close in bed (usually under the covers). They are good with kids who are not too rough and dogs who do not chase them. Siamese cats are very vocal.
