Poodle (miniature)

Overview

Although all three sizes of Poodles (toys, miniatures and standards) share the same ancestry, they have also been bred in three sizes for a long time. Miniature Poodles have been used as small bird dogs and as truffle hunters.

Height

Between 10 and 15 inches tall

Weight

13 to 16 pounds

Color

The coat can be white, apricot, red, silver, or black but must be a solid color with no spots or patches.

Coat type

The coat is curly and thick.

Grooming

The coat should be brushed and combed daily as it will tangle and matt very quickly. Many Poodle owners schedule regular appointments with a professional groomer to bathe, trim and brush the dog's coat but the coat also requires care at home in between these appointments. The Poodle's ears need weekly cleaning and care. The teeth need to be cleaned weekly also and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

13 to 15 years

Temperament

The Miniature Poodle is the calmest of the three sizes, and is a wonderful companion. The larger miniatures are great family dogs while the smaller ones may be too small for children's play.

Activity level

These dogs enjoy daily walks and play sessions and are great in many canine sports, including obedience and agility, and serve as wonderful therapy dogs.

Training

Miniature Poodles will thrive in training as they are bright, curious, and want to please. Housetraining may take some time and the owner should be consistent and patient.

Common Health Problems

  • Addison's disease
  • Cushing's disease
  • Knee problems
  • Seizure disorders
