Pomeranian

Overview

The tiny toy Pomeranians we know today had working dog ancestors. In Iceland and Lapland, these dogs (who weighed about 30 pounds then) herded sheep and pulled sleds.

Height

8 to 11 inches

Weight

3 to 7 pounds

Color

Red, orange, cream, black, brown, brindle

Coat type

Thick, dense undercoat with an outer coat that stands out from the body

Grooming

This coat needs thorough brushing two to three times per week. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

14 to 16 years

Temperament

Pomeranians have no idea how small they are and may challenge a larger dog just for fun without realizing the larger dog can hurt them. Poms are bright, quick, and intelligent. They are too fragile for small children but are great companions for older kids who are gentle.

Activity level

Poms need vigorous daily exercise. Many Poms thrive in canine sports of all kinds.

Training

Training will help keep the Pom's inquisitive mind busy. Housetraining requires patience and a schedule.

Common Health Problems

  • Knee problems
  • Eye problems
  • Tracheal collapse
  • Hypoglycemia
