Old English Sheepdog
Overview
This large, shaggy herding breed’s history has been lost. Although developed in southern England, its origins were unrecorded.
Height
21 to 22 inches
Weight
80 to 100 pounds
Color
Gray; with or without white markings
Coat type
The undercoat is very thick while the outer coat is long and plentiful.
Grooming
This coat requires considerable daily grooming. If not thoroughly brushed regularly, it will mat. Potential owners should discuss the breed’s coat care with a breeder and a groomer prior to acquiring one of these dogs. In addition to brushing, at least once each week, the dog’s teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.
Life expectancy
9 to 12 years
Temperament
Although originally herding dogs, today these are companion dogs who would prefer to follow you around the house and snuggle with you on the sofa.
Activity level
These dogs need moderate exercise; a good walk, run, and play session is fine.
Training
These are very large dogs who need to learn early that the owner is in charge; therefore training should begin in puppyhood and continue into adulthood.
