Norwegian Forest Cat

Overview

The Norwegian Forest Cat is an ancient farm cat that is a true demonstration of survival of the fittest. Instead of being created by people, as so many cat breeds have been, these cats bred independently and those best suited to survive, did.

Physical characteristics

These are big cats, weighing from 14 to 23 pounds. The back legs are slightly longer than the front legs, with a sturdy body.

Color

Tabby color patterns are the most common but any color is fine except for those of the Siamese.

Coat

The outer coat is long, with tufts on the ears and a long bushy tail. The undercoat is thick and dense.

Grooming and care

Brush weekly. Clean teeth once a week, especially during kittenhood so the cat becomes accustomed to it. Trim toenails weekly and check the ears, cleaning when needed.

Life expectancy (indoors)

16 to 18 years

Temperament

Intelligent, sweet, affectionate, and patient. Norwegian Forest Cats often bond more strongly to one family member. They love giving head bumps. They get along great with children as well as other pets, and can be quietly vocal.
