Overview

This Canadian breed is without doubt the world's most impressive water rescue dog. These dogs will swim a tow rope to a stranded boat or will bring in a swimmer in trouble.

26 to 28 inches

100 to 150 pounds

Color

Black, brown, gray, and black and white

Coat type

A dense undercoat and a coarse, moderately long outer coat.

Grooming

The coat should be brushed two to three times per week. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

9 to 11 years

Temperament

Newfies are loyal, affectionate, and wonderful family dogs. They are patient with children, even when the kids play rough.

Activity level

This breed needs a good long walk every day and if possible, a swim. However, afterwards, they will be happy to relax and take a nap.

Training

Training should begin early as these are very powerful dogs.

  • Bloat and torsion
  • Eye problems
