Mutt

Overview

The All American Mutt, often called a Heinz 57 or a mixed breed, is a crossing of two or more breeds of dogs. Sometimes the genetics can be determined, especially if one of the parent breeds had some very distinct physical characteristics. Sometimes, though, a mixed breed dog is just a dog and his heritage is unknown.

Height

Varies, depending upon the parentage of the dog. Multi-generational mixes tend to be between 18 and 22 inches tall.

Weight

Varies but multi-generational mixes are usually 45 to 60 pounds

Color

Yellows, reds, browns, and sables are most common, as are white spots on the chest and white toes.

Coat type

Varies, but most multi-generational mixes tend to have a short to medium length coat with a thick undercoat.

Grooming

Weekly brushing, ear and teeth cleaning, and weekly toenail trimming are normal.

Life expectancy

14 to 16 years

Temperament

Again, temperament can vary depending upon the dog's genetics.

Activity level

Most healthy mixed breed dogs are eager for a good run every day, and as many play sessions as they can get.

Training

All dogs should be introduced to training as puppies so that they can learn acceptable household rules and social manners. Socialization to other puppies and people is also important.

Common Health Problems

This, too, will vary depending upon the heritage of each dog. For example, a mixed breed dog who has a Standard Poodle, Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd in his background could vary well be prone to hip dysplasia, bloat and torsion, and eye problems as these are common in most of his ancestors.
