Maine Coon

Overview

The Maine Coon a unique American breed whose ancestors arrived in Maine on ships from Europe. A large, coated breed, it is well suited for the harsh weather of northern New England.

Physical characteristics

This is a very large breed, with females often weighing sixteen pounds and males often topping twenty pounds. The body is strong, solid and muscular.

Color

Tabby color patterns are most prevalent although solid colors are also seen.

Coat

The coat is long and thick, but is coarser and less apt to tangle than many other long coated breeds. The coat is water resistant.

Grooming and care

Brush twice weekly to prevent tangles. Clean teeth once a week, especially during kittenhood so the cat becomes accustomed to it. Trim toenails weekly and check the ears, cleaning when needed.

Life expectancy (indoors)

16 to 18 years

Temperament

Although not lap cats, these cats are affectionate and enjoy being near their owners. They are dignified and somewhat reserved, and often become one-person cats. They can be vocal and chirp when greeting their favorite person.
