Labradoodle

Overview

Although still a mixture of breeds (a cross of Labrador Retrievers and Poodles) some people are working to establish these dogs as a pure breed.

Height

Varies, depending upon whether the Poodle was a Miniature or Standard. Generally from 17 to 20 inches tall or from 21 to 24 inches tall.

Weight

From 30 to 45 pounds or from 50 to 65 pounds

Color

Any color; solid colors preferred.

Coat type

The coat varies, again depending upon the Lab or Poodle heritage. Most have either a thick fleece coat or a wool coat.

Grooming

Both the fleece and wool coats need brushing two to three times per week. Most pet owners have the coat trimmed regularly to keep it neat and clean. The ears and teeth need weekly cleaning and the toenails need to be trimmed at the same time.

Life expectancy

12 to 14 years

Temperament

Some dogs have more of the dignified Standard Poodle temperament while many are more like their Lab ancestors- happy and extroverted. Most Labradoodles are bright, intelligent dogs.

Activity level

Although their needs vary according to the individual dog, most are active and will enjoy daily walks and play sessions.

Training

All Labradoodles will enjoy early training and socialization. Most are good at several different canine sports and some are serving as excellent service dogs.

Common Health Problems

Labradoodles have the potential to suffer from any of the health problems that both Poodles and Labs share, including:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Eye problems
  • Allergies
