Jack Russell Terrier
Overview
The Jack Russell Terrier was developed in the late 1800s by Reverend John Russell in England. He wanted a feisty, energetic hunting dog. The breed split in the US with the Parson Russell Terrier being recognized by the American Kennel Club and the original JRT recognized by the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America and the United Kennel Club.

10 to 15 inches tall

10 to 20 pounds
Color
White with tan, brown, or black markings.
Coat type
Two coat types:
- Smooth: This coat is short and smooth.
- Rough: This coat type is more terrier-like and wiry.
Grooming
Brush both coat types once or twice a week. Each week trim the toenails and clean the ears and teeth.
Life expectancy
14 to 16 years
Temperament
This is an active, energetic, pushy little dog. He may be too much dog for young children or the elderly. This breed is rarely recommended for a first time dog owner.
Activity level
This breed is not a couch potato; these dogs need vigorous daily exercise. They like to play fetch, hunt small critters in the stable or woodpile, and love to run.
Training
Because of their independent nature and strong will, training should begin young and continue through adolescence. If you keep the Jack Russell Terrier's mind busy, he will be less apt to get into trouble.
