Collie

Overview

This Scottish breed was used to herd sheep and today retains that desire to work. Although not used as much on farms today, Collies make great therapy dogs and enjoy many canine sports.

Height

22 to 26 inches

Weight

50 to 75 pounds

Color

Sable and white; black, rust and white; blue merle; or white

Coat type

  • Smooth coat: Short, dense coat with a thick undercoat.
  • Rough coat: A long double coat with a lush mane and a plumed tail.

Grooming

  • Both coat types: At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.
  • Smooth coat: Brush well weekly.
  • Rough coat: At least twice a week, brush the long coat thoroughly.

Life expectancy

10 to 12 years

Temperament

Collies are very loyal, affectionate, and watchful. They are great with children.

Activity level

Originally a herding breed bred to work every day, Collies can still be quite active although not as busy as some other herding breeds.

Training

Collies need training so they can learn household rules and manners, but also to keep their bright minds busy. They are also watchful and can bark; training can prevent that from becoming a problem.

  • Eye defects
  • Bloat and torsion
  • Sensitivity to ivermectin
