Bichon Frise

Overview

This Mediterranean breed has been a companion dog for hundreds of years. They were often carried aboard ships as to keep the sailors company and to be used as barter in the ship's ports of call.

Height

9 to 12 inches

Weight

10 to 16 pounds

Color

White

Coat type

Fluffy, soft, and curly

Grooming

At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed. The coat often needs daily brushing and combing as it will tangle and matt. The coat also grows continually and will need trimming every four to six weeks. Most pet owners use the services of a professional groomer.

Life expectancy

13 to 15 years

Temperament

These are bright, happy companion dogs. Bichons are good with children who are not too rough but may be too small for active kids. These dogs may be small but they are very alert watchdogs. Without training, they have a tendency to bark too much.

Activity level

Bichons like to play and go for walks but they will also snuggle on the sofa with you.

Training

All Bichons need socialization as puppies. Without it, they can be overly cautious and watchful; even reserved. Training can also help control the barking. Housetraining can be a challenge.

Common Health Problems

  • Knee problems
  • Allergies
  • Eye problems
