Basset Hound

Overview

The Basset Hound is a French hunting dog designed to be used by men on foot (rather than on horseback). It trailed rabbits, hare, and deer, as well as other game.

Height

No taller than 14 inches

Weight

40 to 60 pounds

Color

Although the Basset Hound may be any hound color, the most recognizable is red or brown and white with a black saddle.

Coat type

Short and smooth

Grooming

The coat should be brushed weekly with a soft bristle brush. The ears can be prone to infection and must be cleaned weekly more often if the dog gets wet. The teeth need to be cleaned weekly, too, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

11 to 13 years

Temperament

Basset puppies can be rowdy and silly but adults are friendly, loyal, and affectionate.

Activity level

Although Basset Hounds would prefer to be couch potatoes, they do need regular exercise as the breed is prone to obesity. Daily walks are good as is a daily play session.

Training

Training can be a challenge; Bassets were bred to use their nose to hunt and as such, often have no desire to work or follow orders.

Common Health Problems:

  • Obesity
  • Back problems
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Bloat and torsion
