American Staffordshire Terrier

Overview

The American Staffordshire Terrier, or Am Staff, shares a history with several other breeds that were used in the blood sports of ancient England, most notably the old English Bulldog and white English Terrier.

Short and slick.

Grooming

Brush the short coat weekly with a soft bristled brush. On the same schedule, trim the toenails and clean the ears and teeth.

Life expectancy

11 to 13 years

Temperament

These dogs are great family pets, loyal and affectionate, and are very patient with kids. However, they were bred to fight and are often aggressive with other dogs.

Activity level

Am Staffs need vigorous daily exercise. They are strong and powerful and enjoy several canine sports, including weight pulling and carting.

Training

Early socialization to other dogs can help temper the breed's aggressive tendencies toward other dogs. Unfortunately, though, even with socialization, some remain aggressive so care should always be taken with other dogs. Training can help give this bright breed something to occupy his mind.
