Akita

Overview

This Japanese dog was bred as a hunting dog but has since evolved into a companion dog. In Japan today, the Akita is a symbol of happiness, health, and longevity.

24 to 28 inches tall

Weight

65 to 115 pounds

Color

White, pinto, and brindle

Coat type

The undercoat is soft and dense; the outer coat is straight and stands out from the body.

Grooming

At least once each week, the dog’s teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

10 to 11 years

Temperament

These dogs are quite protective of both their home and their people. They are serious, devoted, and loyal. They are also strong minded and can be too much dog for the first time dog owner.

Activity level

Although physically very strong, these are not overly active dogs. Daily walks and a play session is fine.

Training

Training should begin very young so that the dog and owner reach an understanding as to who sets the household rules.
