Affenpinscher

Overview

This very old breed was originally a vermin hunter and was used to keep homes, farms, and food businesses free of rats and mice.

Height

10 to 11 inches tall

Weight

8 to 10 pounds

Color

Black, gray, silver, black and tan, or red

Coat type

Rough, coarse terrier coat

Grooming

For dog shows, the coat is hand stripped which requires some special skills. Most pet owners have the dogs professionally groomed. At least once each week, the dog's teeth should be brushed, the ears cleaned, and the toenails trimmed.

Life expectancy

16 to 18 years

Temperament

These are funny little dogs who love to play the clown. They are good with children who are not too rough.

Activity level

These dogs need a daily play session, walks, and amusement. Affenpinschers are active dogs, not couch potatoes.

Training

All Affenpisnchers should attend a puppy class for socialization and training so their owners can learn how to teach them. Housetraining can be a challenge and requires patience on the owner's part.

Common health concerns

  • Knee problems
  • Breathing problems in hot, humid weather
