Abyssinian
Overview
The Abyssinian originated in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) but first gained popularity in England in the mid-1800s.
Physical characteristics
This is a lean, athletic cat. The ears are large and the head is wedge-shaped. The eyes are large and a rounded, almond shape.
Color
The individual hairs are ticked, which means they have four bands of colors on each hair. This creates a uniquely colored coat. Overall colors include ruddy, red, blue, and fawn.
Coat
The coat should be brushed weekly. The teeth need to be cleaned weekly, especially during kittenhood so the cat becomes accustomed to it. The toenails should be trimmed weekly and the ears checked and cleaned if necessary.
Grooming and care
Brush the thick coat two to three times per week. Clean teeth once a week, especially during kittenhood so the cat becomes accustomed to it. Trim toenails weekly and check the ears, cleaning when needed.
Life expectancy (indoors)
14 to 16 years
Temperament
This is not a lap cat, but is very loyal and affectionate. They love to play and often retrieve favorite toys. Abyssinians enjoy helping you do things, which means they will end up in the middle of your newspaper as you try to read it. They make great family cats, especially when treated gently by the children. They are better with older kids rather than toddlers. Anyssinians are also wonderful with other cats and dogs who don't chase them. Be careful with other small pets.
